I watched my niece at the age of about 18 months using baby signs taught to her by her parents and her vocabulary flourish. This adorable little girl continues to be amazingly verbose for a 2 year old. Then I got pregnant and had my baby evicted from a cozy womb at 31 weeks. A lot of unexpected and unwelcomed paranoia comes with having a preemie baby, including, “Will she be speech delayed?” So, to give my daughter an extra boost my husband I decided that we, too, would teach her how to sign. There are many supporting studies showing that teaching your baby sign language does not hinder speech development. It actually aids it!Doing some research I found a fantastic DVD that had excellent customer reviews on Amazon.com. “My Baby Can Talk” has been one of my daughter’s favorite “movies” since about 10 months old. It wasn’t long after using the DVD that she started using a couple of the signs. She has slowly added more and now at 17 months, she is using at least 25 different signs. (The signs taught are official signs of the American Sign Language.) She is also is making great strides in her efforts to talk. She has about 12 fairly intelligible words in her vocabulary, which is on track according to the speech-language pathologists on Talking Child (www.talkingchild.com). I also have their Baby Babble DVD and Sophia seems love to it. Of course, most importantly, we just talk to her and she tries to mimic which is just too cute on any baby.
What’s really cool about both of these sites is that they offer tools, not just sales. My Baby Can Talk site has a video dictionary of all the signs. And Talking Child has development charts. Both of these have helped my paranoia and I feel more educated in knowing how to help my daughter’s speech develop. Of course, I realize about 12 years from now I’ll regret her ever learning to talk…. hopefully she won’t being using a more explicit form of sign langugage then, either!

I’m a big fan of products that make my life as a mom easier, especially when it makes my kids feel better! That being said, my two best friends and two favorite products of January 2007 are BOTH made by Little Noses. My pediatrician introduced me to the nasal drops when Lily had her first bad cold. He also gave me the coolest thing ever - a modified syringe. He took a syringe and deftly removed the needle (lest he be supplying a heroin addict), and told me that I could put a couple of drops of Little Noses into the cap, then use the syringe to suck up just the right amount. The syringe is small, so I can put the tip into whatever child of mine has a cold or stuffy nose, and dispense the right amount of drops before they can even say “boo”. Or “get out of my face, FOOL!”
Not to get into too much detail, but my youngest daughter Arden was a bit, uh, backed up in the intestinal arena. Three days sans poo, and she was very unhappy. Lo and behold, Little Tummies Laxative Drops to the rescue! Thankfully, they aren’t nose drops, but regular ole’ medicine (I had to get over the nasty color and smell, because she didn’t seem to mind the taste and asked for more). So if you’re dealing with stuffed up noses or stuffed up rumps, Little Noses or Tummies has got you covered.

Recently Jenn heard from one of her fellow Rochesterians (as in Rochester, NY). Denee had a navel piercing but by 20 weeks into her pregnancy, she faced either removing her piercing or living with the scar. She decided she’d fix this problem, and now offers a high-quality and super-cool adjustable piercing that grows with your belly.
We love and admire her entrepreneurial spirit, and know plenty of pierced mamas that could have used her fabulous product. So we are helping spread the word. Her site can be found here. And as always, if there are any products you’ve found particularly helpful for either yourself or your favorite new mom or dad, please let us know. We’d love to blog about it!

My daughter is truly in love with Elmo. She often comments that she would like to be a “care-ack-ter” like Elmo. Sometimes she even says she wants to marry Elmo. So for Christmas I busted loose and got her the very cool and stylish “Elmo Groupie” Raglan tee. She loves it! And wherever she goes, mothers and fathers everywhere are greeted with the back view of “La la la la” so they too can have that annoying and repetitive and insanity-inducing tune in their heads for the rest of the day.
My youngest daughter, firmly entrenched in the terrible 2’s, received the “Grouchmeister” raglan tee. Hey, I’m sorry, but as she approached her second birthday, she had more in common with Oscar than any other Sesame Street character. Or care-ack-ter. Sesame Street rules! You can check out the entire line of B. Glam’s Sesame Street onesie and t-shirt line here.
